- Is Your Computer
Running Slowly?
Many computer slowness issues can be easily fixed. Common causes of
computer slowness are spyware, viruses, heat, and lack of adequate
hardware. Listed below are a few tips to help improve the performance
of your computer:
Spyware
is a type of software often installed unexpectedly by a computer
user. The author of the software uses spyware to cause advertising
pop-up messages to be displayed on the victim's computer or to gather
information about visited Web sites. Common programs for removing
spyware include Ad-aware, Spybot Search & Destroy and Spyblaster.
Viruses
are malicious programs designed to damage files on a computer. They
are often spread through e-mail attachments, peer-to-peer file sharing
programs, and instant messaging programs. Most viruses spread to
other people through a victim's address book by sending out e-mails
to contacts without the user ever knowing it. To avoid such vulnerabilities,
install an anti-virus client such as Symantec's
Norton Anti-Virus, McAfee
Anti-Virus or Grisoft's
AVG.
One
of the most overlooked solutions to computer slowness is heat dispersion.
All electronic equipment generates heat, and computers (especially
newer computers) generate more heat than most devices. The warmer
a computer's processor is, the slower it will compute. Excessive
heat can even cause damage to the equipment. Users should make sure
that the exhaust fan(s) on the back of the system can adequately
vent hot air out of the system's case. Stacking papers, books, etc.
around your computer can insulate it causing heat issues. The same
precaution holds true for printers, DSL modems, and various other
peripherals.
New
software is generally designed on the pretense that the consumer
will have new equipment. If you purchase and run new software packages
on an old computer, you may experience slowness issues. Depending
on the age and hardware specifications of your system, you may be
able to upgrade your system's RAM, processor, or other components
to significantly increase performance.
If these tips
seem a bit daunting, or you have tried them to no avail, you may wish
to have an expert examine the system.

- Winning E-Story
Submitted by: Beverly Haro
I received a phone call from my daughter in CA telling me that my
son had just been taken to the hospital following a serious automobile/motorcycle
accident. He was being taken into surgery immediately to try and save
his leg. My son remained in the hospital for 2 months and because
of having Natco e-mail I was able to stay in communication with the
family. I also received pictures of my son in his hospital room giving
me the "thumbs up" and a great big smile! All the e-mails
and pictures kept me going until I was able to fly out and take care
of him after he was released. THANK YOU NATCO!!
Beverly Haro just earned two free months of NATCO Internet service!
Submit your E-Story today and you could be our next winner! Remember
that you can enter more than once. So, if you didn't win this time,
try again! Just go to www.natcotech.com/estories.htm
and tell us how using NATCO's Internet or e-mail service has made
your life easier, helped you promote or manage your business, or simply
how much you enjoy using the Internet and e-mail. If your E-Story
is chosen, you'll win two months of free NATCO dialup Internet service
($19.95 X 2 = $39.90) or an equivalent credit on your DSL or ISDN
account.
- Latest Virus
Threat for Microsoft Windows
Earlier this month, you may have received an e-mail from NATCO warning
about an upcoming virus. This virus spreads by opened e-mail attachments.
It first lowers security settings on infected computers and then e-mails
itself to others. On the third day of every month, the virus attempts
to overwrite Word document files, PowerPoint files, and various other
files on the affected computer.
To avoid becoming infected by this virus or those like it, install
and UPDATE an anti-virus program. This virus was discovered in mid-January,
and those who updated their virus scanners often, were prepared before
February 3rd when the virus caused damage. If you think you may have
been infected by this virus, you can download and run a free tool
from Symantec (makers of Norton Anti-Virus) to find and remove this
particular virus. To get this tool, go to the link listed below: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blackmal.e@mm.html
To minimize the threats these malicious programs cause, ensure you
download the latest updates for Windows (windowsupdate.microsoft.com)
and use anti-virus software like Norton,
AVG,
or Mcafee.
