Open Document Format
By far, the most popular office suite software is Microsoft Office.
Programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint have become extremely
popular with business users as well as residential users. Microsoft
Office, starting at $399, can be quite expensive for the
casual user and even for businesses which require multiple licenses.
One popular alternative is OpenOffice.org.
OpenOffice.org is a
software suite which offers comparable programs for free. Word
processor, spreadsheet, and presentation programs are included
in the suite. OpenOffice.org saves information in a format known
as "Open Document Format." Though the suite allows users
to save files
in
a format
legible to Microsoft's office suite, there have been a few incompatibilities.
These problems may soon be resolved.
Microsoft has acknowledged that it has begun working to become
more compatible with the Open Document Format. Users of Microsoft
Office 2007 will be able to read, edit,
and
save OpenOffice.org files.
With these advancements, even governments, like
the state of Massachusetts, are switching to Open Document Format.

Latest Virus Pretends to be Microsoft Authentication
Software
Microsoft uses software known as "Windows Genuine Advantage"
to deter piracy. Before downloading updates from windowsupdate.microsoft.com,
a Windows user must install the WGA software and verify that the
operating system has not been installed on another computer. A virus
has been identified which pretends to be a part of the WGA software.
The virus, named Cuebot-K,
spreads over AOL's instant messaging program. The virus creates
a backdoor in the infected user's system and disables Windows XP's
firewall. To avoid infection, users should keep anti-virus programs
updated and remain cautious about downloading and running programs
sent over instant messaging programs.
