  • It is better to be safe than sorry. This old adage still rings true about many things including your computer's anti-virus software. If you don't have good anti-virus software that is updated often, chances are good that your computer will eventually get infected with a dangerous virus. The viruses being released into cyber space are getting more and more destructive every day. Protect yourself from infection - make sure you keep your anti-virus software current.

Norton and McAfee are both good choices when it comes to virus protection and you can find both at most places that sell computer software. Both of these can also be ordered or  updated online at either www.norton.com or www.mcafee.com.

We recommend updating your anti-virus software at least once a week. Although this is no absolute guarantee that you won't encounter a virus at one time or another, you greatly reduce your chances by staying alert and taking precautions. You can learn more about how to update your anti-virus software by reading the documentation on the manufacturer's Web site.
Web Pages
  • It is easier than you think to share something you find online with a friend. You can send the entire web page or just a link to the page to a friend in an e-mail message. Just click on File in the upper left-hand corner of your browser and place your pointer over Send. A menu will appear. Now select either Page by e-mail or Link by e-mail. A new message will automatically open with the page or link included. Just address and send your message as usual!

  • Be careful when you type that Web address! There are literally millions of Web sites on the Internet and many have similar Web addresses. Double check the URL before you type it to avoid going to the wrong Web site.

Remember that government addresses (such as www.irs.gov) will always end in .gov, not .com. Non-profit organizations (such as www.redcross.org) will usually end in .org.

E-Mail

  • Just a reminder: Be careful when opening attachments - even when they come from friends or family. Opening infected e-mail attachments is the easiest and most common way that computer viruses are spread. Remember that a virus can access your address book and automatically send itself to everyone listed in your address book -- and the message will appear to be from you! Don't assume that a message with a friend's name in the From line of a message is safe.

The best way around this is to confirm with your friend before opening the attachment. Call them or send a short e-mail message asking for reassurance that the attachment is in fact from them.

Another way to be sure the attachments you receive are safe is to develop a system with the people you e-mail. Pick out a code word and everyone agree to place that word in the subject line of any e-mail containing an attachment. Think of the frustration this small precaution could save you if it helps you avoid getting just one computer virus.
