Vista, Microsoft's New Operating
System
The latest operating system from Microsoft, named Windows Vista,
is scheduled to be released to the public in January 2007. With
as
many as five
versions of Vista proposed, some versions of Vista will target
corporate users and some are intended for home users. Home
users
will have a choice between a basic and premium version (the primary
difference is that the premium version will exhibit a more useful
and interesting graphical interface called Aero).
Originally code-named "Longhorn," Vista has been under
development for several
years.
The new operating system promises better security, greater ease
of use, better performance, and simpler networking capabilities.
Of course, these benefits come at a price. The hardware to enjoy
these improvements will mean investment in upgrades for most users
and new systems for some users. Microsoft reports Vista Basic's
minimum system requirements as follows:
* A modern processor (at least 800MHz).
* 512 MB of system memory.
* A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable.
Some people who have tested the pre-release version of Vista with
the minimum requirements have complained of slow
performance issues.
The Premium Edition requires hardware which meets at least the
following requirements:
* 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor.
* 1 GB of system memory.
* A graphics processor that runs Windows Aero.
* 128 MB of graphics memory.
* 40 GB of hard drive capacity with 15 GB free space.
* DVD-ROM Drive.
* Audio output capability.
* Internet access capability.
If the listings above seem like tech-gibberish, Microsoft advises
that "In general, PCs purchased within the last two years
have a better
chance of
being
able to
run Windows
Vista
as is or with affordable improvements to the system hardware."
Microsoft provides a program for determining if Windows XP users meet
the requirements for upgrading to Vista. XP users may download
the program from Microsoft at: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/upgradeadvisor/default.mspx.
