  • New Virus Warning
A new type of computer virus has been unleashed and is growing in popularity. Users of popular instant messaging software such as “AOL Instant Messenger” (also called “AIM”) have been targeted. The method of infection works as follows: the victim receives a message with a link to download a screen saver, music file, etc. (which is really a virus) from one of his friends. Once the victim is tricked into downloading and running the virus, it infects his computer and automatically sends a message to all of the victim’s friends requesting that they download the screen saver, music file, etc. spreading the virus.

Symptoms of infection include the inability to open some programs which could be used to disable the virus (i.e. the Task Manager and Registry Editor) as well as strange, erratic behavior with an instant messaging program. Prevention is generally achieved by user awareness. If a friend sends you a link to download something, ask him a question about the link. If he remains silent with no response, it is quite possible that he cannot respond because he is dealing with a virus infection, and the link is actually linking to a virus. If you become infected with a virus of this nature, use your favorite search engine to locate an AIM virus removal tool. Many such tools are available for free. Also use an anti-virus program such as Norton, AVG, or MacAfee, and keep it updated.

  • Winning E-Story Submitted by: Alice Hedlund
Watching our expenses, we decided to get either cable for TV or the DSL for our computer.  Getting the DSL was such a wise choice!  For news, sports, replay of a favorite radio program that we missed, weather, you name it… it’s there and fine-tuned for our interest or locality.  For extra help with my Sunday School lessons, I have a favorite website with biblical coloring pictures and puzzles.  On top of that is the real joy we have of being in communication with our daughter in Egypt, even having audio and video conversation “free”.  I’m sure the savings and pleasure from this alone makes our DSL worth it!  Today, we saw pictures of our grandchildren in their kitchen in Cairo.  Last week, we heard them playing their guitars and singing for us.  Other family members are scattered over the USA, but we keep in touch by email, and today, I also “was at” (They put the pictures on a website), a wedding officiated by our son in Seattle!  Thank you for helping make this all possible.

Alice Hedlund just earned two free months of NATCO Internet service! Submit your E-Story today and you could be our next winner! Remember that you can enter more than once. So, if you didn’t win this time, try again! Just go to www.natcotech.com/estories.php and tell us how using NATCO's Internet or e-mail service has made your life easier, helped you promote or manage your business, or simply how much you enjoy using the Internet and e-mail. If your E-Story is chosen, you'll win two months of free NATCO dialup Internet service ($19.95 X 2 = $39.90) or an equivalent credit on your DSL or ISDN account.
