- Super Tech: Russ Woodman
This month, the spotlight is on John Russell "Russ" Woodman, NATCO's
systems administrator. Russ relocated from the Northeast to become a
part of our team. There he acquired 10 years of experience and had a
similar position for Burrelle's Information Services. Russ is responsible
for setup, programming and maintenance of NATCO's ISP-related (Internet
Service Provider) network and computer hardware and services, said NATCO
Plant Manager Steven Sanders Jr.
Accepting the position at NATCO allowed Russ to work for a smaller company
and to be away from "the frozen northern Maine." He formerly resided
at Presque Isle, Maine.
Russ studied both education and technical topics in college at the University
of New Hampshire and the University of Maine at Fort Kent, then worked
in computer/technical positions. He belongs to several professional
organizations, including SAGE (Systems Administrators Guild), USENIX,
and ARRL (American Radio/Relay League).
Russ enjoys computers, amateur radio, electronics, music, movies and
travel.
- Use Caution
When Adding Software
One of the great things about computers these days is how easy it is
to install new programs. The catch to this point, however, is that sometimes
a seemingly harmless program can change settings without warning and
leave the owner confused and frustrated when other programs stop functioning
correctly. Remember to read the documentation that comes with any new
software and make sure that it is compatible with your operating system.
Also, watch for any indication in the software's instructions that installation
will modify other settings.
Usually, a NATCO or another computer technician can quickly adjust any
setting changes that do occur as a result of adding new software. However,
this service is not provided in our free technical support. NATCO Technologies
technicians will provide free first time configuration for new customers.
In addition, our technicians will offer free ongoing assistance with
the following issues:
- If you purchase a new computer, our technicians will provide free
configuration assistance over the phone.
- If you wish to upgrade your NATCO access service or add services
(including additional e-mail accounts, moving from modem access
to ISDN, etc.) our technicians will provide free assistance over
the phone.
- Our technicians will assist customers who have problems with sending
or receiving e-mail or connecting.
NATCO Technologies does NOT provide any
technical service for the following issues:
- Problems caused by the
installation and/or deletion of software.
- Problems that are diagnosed as
hardware issues. These problems are referred to the computer
manufacturer and/or the retailer who sold the computer.
- LAN configuration and support.
These issues may be referred to an outside computer maintenance
company.
- Problems with customer Web sites.
These are referred to a Web site construction/maintenance firm.
NATCO does not assume responsibility for the function and/or
maintenance of hosted sites.
- Winning E-Story: submitted by Gordon
Jackson of Yellville - Dialup Customer
E-Story: Enjoy the NATCO Internet - that is an understatement.
Our first grandson was born on February 4th of this year in San Francisco.
The Internet (e-mail) kept us in touch with the development of our first
grandson born pre-mature. We received pictures via e-mail from the time
he was born to this day. Our son sends us weekly pictures so we can
enjoy his changes from week to week. We can only go to San Francisco
once a year so the weekly e-mail pictures help us feel that we are part
of his life or him part of ours! Thanks!
-
Thanks
to all of you who submitted your Internet E-Story this month. The
competition was thick - we had so many great stories to choose from!
None the less, Gordon Jackson just earned two free
months of NATCO Internet service. Submit your E-Story and get a chance
to become our next winner! Remember that you can enter more than
once so if you didn't win this time, try again! Just go to www.natcotech.com/estories.php
and tell us how using NATCO's Internet or e-mail service has made your
life easier, helped you promote or run your business, or simply how much
you enjoy using the Internet and e-mail. If your E-Story is chosen,
you'll win two months free NATCO dial up Internet Service or an
equivalent account credit!

- Don't Be
a Victim of Virus Hoaxes
E-mail messages that tell you to delete legitimate files on your system
or forward their false alarm to others are virus hoaxes. Visit the Hoax
Encyclopedia before believing those urgent sounding emails warning
of non-existent viruses. To get the truth about other deceptive messages,
visit Urban Legends and Folklore.
- Tech Tip
Delete chain e-mail and junk e-mail - Never forward
or reply to them. These types of e-mail are called spam, or unsolicited,
intrusive mail that clogs up the network.
Back up your files on a regular basis. If a virus destroys
your files, at least you can replace them with your backup copy. You
should store your backup copy in a separate location from your work
files, one that is preferably not on your computer.
Regularly update your virus software. Instructions
and more information can be found on your anti-virus software's Web
site:
www.norton.com
www.mcafee.com
www.grisoft.com (AVG)
- Recent Virus Threats
If you determine that your computer is infected with a virus, visit
your virus software's Web site for removal instructions or contact the
technician at the store where you purchased your system.
